HP EliteBook, ZBook series: Specifications and features
All the HP EliteBook models come with 5G or Gigabit Class 4G LTE to stay connected at all times. They have a wide-angle camera with an 88-degree field of view for a better video conferencing experience. The edges are tapered making it easier to open the laptops.
HP EliteBook 800 G7 series laptops are powered by up to 10th gen six-core Intel Core vPro processors and are available in 13.3-inch, 14-inch, and 15.6-inch screen sizes. The laptops also claim long batter life, and the HP EliteBook 830 G7 in particular can get up to 23 hours and 15 minutes of battery life.
The HP EliteBook 805 G7 series laptops are powered by the AMD Ryzen PRO processors along with Radeon VEGA graphics. The HP EliteBook 835 G7 getting up to 24 hours of battery life.
Finally, the HP EliteBook x360 series includes the HP EliteBook x360 830 G7, HP EliteBook x360 1030 G7, and the HP EliteBook x360 1040 G7. The HP EliteBook x360 830 G7 is a mainstream convertible business laptop while the other two are premium laptops. The HP EliteBook x360 830 G7 comes with 4×4 LTE antennas and a 360-degree hinge. The EliteBook x360 1030 G7 and EliteBook x360 1040 G7 are also convertibles and boast of 89% screen-to-body ratio. The EliteBook x360 1040 G7 in particular gets up to 29 hours of battery life. All three are powered by 10th gen six-core Intel Core vPro processors.
The ZBook Firefly 14 G7 and ZBook Firefly 15 G7 are powered by up to 10th gen six-core Intel Core processors, Nvidia Quadro P520 graphics, and 4GB RAM. They come with HDR 400 4K UHD displays with 500nits brightness. They also have an option for 4G gigabit LTE (4×4) to stay connected on the go.

Holy bloatware! OK, it’s not all bloatware, but when I opened the Start Menu on the EliteBook, I was bombarded with a baker’s dozen of HP apps. Please HP, for the last time (I know it won’t be), find a way to package these together because it’s unwieldy at this point.

I won’t go into detail on every app HP includes, but it’s worth spotlighting a few. For instance, HP Workwell prompts you to exercise at times and gives you insight on your work patterns. I get it HP, this lifestyle ain’t healthy.
HP Sure Click is a threat-alert software while PC Hardware Diagnostics (along with needing a more creative name) gives you a rundown of how your PC is performing. There’s also a power management app, a separate app with documentation, another for support and a JumpStart program for getting your system setup.
But wait, that’s not all. Also pre-installed on the EliteBook 830 and 940 are a couple of Intel management programs along with the standard stock of Microsoft apps that appear on all Windows 10 Pro systems.

HP EliteBook x360 830 G6 review: Display
The 13.in, 1,920×1,080 touchscreen performs respectably as well. Brightness and contrast are standouts, at a peak 549.5cd/m2 and 2,310:1 respectively; the former, in particular, is excellent by business laptop standards.
Colour performance is more mixed, as sRGB coverage is merely decent at 89.7%, while a slight lack of accuracy is shown in the average delta-E of 2.94.
In the EliteBook x360 830 G6’s defence, this won’t be an issue unless you need to perform especially colour-sensitive work like photo editing. That said, there is a bigger, more universal annoyance in the anti-glare coating. It prevents reflections but the effect is laid on heavily, and looking at the display from any angle other than dead-centre can leave certain parts looking dark and shaded, particularly in the corners.
Funnily enough, you can narrow the viewing angles even further — intentionally — by pressing the Sure View button. If you’re unfamiliar with this feature, it drops the brightness and alters the screen backlighting to make the display appear almost blacked-out when viewed at an angle — preventing snoopers from seeing any sensitive information you may be typing.
While we wish there were less of a darkening effect when Sure View is switched off, it is an elegant solution to the peeping problem, and could make you feel a lot more comfortable using the EliteBook x360 830 G6 on a crowded train or plane.
HP EliteBook x360 830 G6 review: Design
Take, for instance, build quality. This is about as solid and robust a convertible laptop as you’re likely to find, outside of fully ruggedised models, with the EliteBook x360 830 G6’s metal chassis providing good looks, a pleasant feel and a reassuring hardiness all at once. The 360-degree hinge is nice and firm, too — not so tight that it’s a pain to spin the screen around, but not so loose that the display wobbles in the traditional notebook configuration.
It is denser than it looks, weighing a hardly featherlight 1.35kg, but it only measures 215x307x16.9mm, so it’s still as portable as a 2-in-1 should be.
There’s no shortage of extra tricks, either. There’s a convenient magnetic clip for the bundled Active Pen G2 stylus (more on that later) on the right edge, and biometric sign-in tools come in fingerprint sensor and Windows Hello-compatible camera flavours. Both of these work quickly and reliably, though if you want to make use of the new privacy shutter, you’ll need to remember to slide it open to log back in using your face.
Bottom line
Rarely do I review a laptop with as few shortcomings as the EliteBook 830 G7 and EliteBook 840 G7, and yet, I’m not entirely sold. Yes, these systems nail the basics, but they fail to stand out in any way. While they offer a sleek design, a good 1080p display, fast performance and decent battery life, the EliteBook 830 and 840 G7 don’t do anything to separate themselves from the competition.
That doesn’t mean they aren’t the best options. In fact, at the right price, I’d even consider these models over the ThinkPad X1 Carbon, our long-standing best business laptop. It ultimately comes down to pricing — if you can find these on sale for less than their rivals, then don’t hesitate to snag them for your workforce — they’ll be happy with their new systems, trust me.
DISPLAY:
HP Elitebook x360 1040 G7
We’re looking at a Full HD resolution that’s 1920 by 1080 and it’s a 16 to 9 aspect ratio. It’s an IPS display and it’s really excellent. It gets very bright at 385 nits making this a good choice for both indoor and outdoor use. Although it is a glossy display, you will notice some glare or reflections in direct sunlight. The black levels are really good which is 0.34, good white points, excellent contrast, and it has a low Delta-e score of 1.38 making this a very color-accurate display. It also covers the color gamut very well, 94% sRGB, 70% Adobe RGB, 69% of the DCI p3 wide color gamut, and 65% NTSC making this a good choice for content creators.
As I mentioned this is a 16 to 9 aspect ratio, this is great for consuming media, watching Netflix and youtube. I’m liking the 16 to 10 aspect ratio as of less scrolling when it comes to web browsing and better for productivity work such as spreadsheets and word documents. This is an excellent display with very vibrant colors and really good coverage of the color gamut. There are many different display options, I have the low-powered Full HD one that is absolutely gorgeous and gives you phenomenal battery life but you could also get this with the HP sure view reflect, it gives you the privacy display that can reach up to a thousand nits. You could also get this with a UHD HDR display and it also has an OLED variant. So, there are a lot of options when it comes to the display.
HP Elitebook 840 G7
HP really gives a choice between the Elitebook 840 along with the 830. The gap between both is the display size. The 840 G7 includes a 14-inch FHD screen, although the 830 includes a 13.3-inch display. Personally, I believe 14 inches is the best size for a notebook. In this one, there are many screen configurations to select from, all of which are 1080p. This one has the brightness of 400 nits and it also has the option of 250 nits but I don’t recommend that one. If you’d like good battery life, simply turn the brightness down the 400-nit panel. Additionally, there are choices for muti-touch. Finally, HP has some choices using its Sure View solitude screen. It is really pretty cool. You simply press a button and suddenly nobody can view anything if they look over your display from an angle.
The screen of this unit reminds the Elitebook x360 1040 laptop. The colors are true and it is really fine to use, something which can not be said of several matte anti-glare screens. As I mentioned, the footprint of this notebook is smaller than it had been, and that’s because of narrow bezels. This system has an 85% screen-to-body ratio, using a 34% smaller upper bezel, 29% smaller chin, and 19% thinner side bezels. It maintains the webcam as well as the IR webcam at the upper bezel.

Design
HP EliteBook 830 G7 laptops combines uncompromising elegance, sophisticated design and exceptional performance. It is built using a sleek silver aluminum chassis that blends a modern aesthetic with traditional business features.
The top lid and bottom chassis are held firmly together by a single rectangular 360° hinge which permits the display to be opened in the traditional laptop mode, a stand mode, a flat tablet mode, or a tent mode.
The EliteBook 830 G7 laptop measures 11.6 x 7.9 x 0.8 inches and weighs 2.9 pounds. It also has a rounded back edges that allow free movement along a full range of motion, and the machine provides a comfortable grip whether you’re carrying the closed laptop or using it as a tablet.
The X360 830 G7 lid has HP logo at the center to give it a premium look. When opened it has noticeably narrower bezels on all four sides especially along the top and bottom for a much higher screen-to-body ratio. The top bezel houses the IR face recognition system while the bottom bezel host the company’s logo.
HP EliteBook x360 z830 G6 review: Verdict
Sure Sense might not be a killer app for the EliteBook x360 830 G6, but we’re not sure it ever needed one. From its lovely keyboard to its lengthy battery life and extensive connectivity, HP has made a convertible that’s wonderfully practical on the most fundamental levels. There are some niggles, like the anti-glare coating, but it’s nothing you can’t live with.
The absolute best 2-in-1 arguably remains the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1, but the EliteBook x360 830 G6 is cheaper, more portable and has a much tighter focus on enterprise and security. It’s worth the purchase, even with HP’s unusually short product cycles.
EliteBook 830 and EliteBook 840 G7 performance
Powered by an Intel 10th Gen Core i7-10810U CPU and 16GB of RAM, the EliteBook 830 and 840 G7 handled everything I threw at them. My punishing workload involving no less than 30 Google Chrome tabs wasn’t a problem for either system. I played a couple of 1080p YouTube videos while streaming the Champions’ League draw and didn’t notice even a hint of sluggishness.

This dynamic duo flexed all over the competition in our synthetic benchmark tests, with the EliteBook 830 scoring a 4,262 and the 840 G7 notching a 4,378. The Latitude 7410, equipped with an Intel Core i7-10610U, proved with its 3,108 result that splurging on the top-tier CPU variant pays off. Equipped with the same Core i7-10610U CPU, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon (3,913) closed the gap a bit but only the EliteBooks topped the category average (4,037).
With so much power to work with, it’s no wonder the EliteBook 830 and 840 G7 had no problems converting a 4K video to 1080p using the Handbrake app. It took the 13-inch model 17 minutes and 12 seconds and the 14-inch version 15 minutes and 29 seconds. Rival laptops in the Latitude 7410 (22:34) and X1 Carbon (19:51) needed several additional minutes to complete the same task.
Transferring files won’t take long on these EliteBooks thanks to their speedy SSDs. The 840 G7’s 512GB NVMe PCIe SSD took 52 seconds to convert a 25GB multimedia file equating to a transfer rate of 574.9 megabytes per second. The smaller model was a tad slower at 433.9 MBps. I maintain that those are good times, but only the 14-inch EliteBook topped the category average (566.4 MBps) and even it lost out to the X1 Carbon (1,044.7 MBps) and Latitude 7410 (574.9 MBps).

Слабая графика позволила запустить Sid Meier’s Civilization VI: Gathering Storm с невыполнимой скоростью 12 кадров в секунду на EliteBook 840 и 11 кадров в секунду на 13-дюймовой модели. Если это какая-то консультация, а ее на самом деле не должно быть, то у X1 Carbon (8 кадров в секунду) и Latitude 7410 (9 кадров в секунду) дела обстоят хуже. Средний ноутбук премиум-класса может играть в эту игру со скоростью 25 кадров в секунду.
